From the time of standing in line to get on the slide, we have an inherent sense of what is right and wrong, and it is brought to light when someone crowds in, there is an immediate explosion of protest. It is no wonder the rule of law is essential for maintaining order in any society. My guest this week is an attorney who believes in the concept of advocating (legal wellness). He finds it interesting that there is a plethora of books and articles promoting health wellness, financial wellness, but hard pressed to find how we can maintain (legal wellness.) Therefore, he developed a website for those that cannot find or afford an attorney, and he offers (free) guidance on everyday legal situations, and I would encourage you to visit and subscribe to his newsletter that comes with 90 second videos.
Our discussion this week centered around premises liability, meaning, when someone slips and hurts themselves on your property. What are your legal rights as a plaintive or defendant? He teaches class-action litigation at the University of Michigan Law School, has taught complex litigation at Columbia Law School, written a column on civil justice for Law360, and is a top requested speaker for topics related to legal wellness. He has been involved in highly publicized legal cases such as the sex abuse scandal surrounding USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who was employed at Michigan State University. Since we live in a very litigious world, we are only one step away from getting sued, and everyone has a target on their back, he said. And this is where being healthy from a legal standpoint is of utmost importance. The rule of law has a long history, from the ten commandments in 1513 B.C.E. to this country's Constitution that was founded on Judaism in 1787 integrating the judicial, legislative and the executive branch noted in Isaiah 33:22. It has been established that the first law school, however, existed in 450 BC. Known today as modern-day Beirut, Lebanon, was the place for this law school. The curriculum involved Roman law. and all emperors supported the schools, making the written law and rhetoric into an art. In today's world, to become an attorney, you need 7 years of study after graduating high school. These includes 4 years of undergraduate study and 3 years of law school and a truck load of patience. Here is a fun fact. Did you know the “bar” as we know it refers to the exam, but it also refers to the physical barrier in a courtroom that separates the spectators from the lawyers including the judge? The takeaway of this post is to acknowledge that there is a rule of law in every aspect in the world of nature, and we as a human family are no exception. When we speak in terms of right and wrong, it can be also defined as conscionable and unconscionable, therefore, it behooves us to hone our core values to do right by others. It is an inherent obligation whether we realize it or not.
