A number of years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a little lady by the name of Gladys that was approaching 100 years of age. What was so remarkable, her mental acuity was impressive, she was very engaging and sparkled with vivaciousness. At the time I was in my 20s and I immediately knew that this was an opportunity to learn something, so, I proceeded to ask her, "Gladys, what would you say has contributed to your personal longevity?" She asked me to sit down, and of course I did. "Mr. Ben" she says to me, "I come from the time of the horse and buggy, and I have seen the advancement of airplanes, automobiles, and technology, but you know what Mr. Ben? Nothing has changed to improve the human condition."
To paraphrase what she recounted to me that was most important to her was a sense of acceptance, close relationships with family and friends, and a caring community, all of which is a fundamental human need. She had a generous spirit and a contagious laugh, she knew that she still has an important role in life, her age notwithstanding. These principles can be applied professionally and otherwise, where you add value and feeling valued, rights and responsibilities, and about wellness and fairness. Let’s avoid the "me" culture, for many are paying a hefty price.
